How do I know if I have an ingrown toenail?

okay this is gross! i clipped off a hang nail that was on my left big toe(the left side of my bigtoe) and now it got like big & swollen looking & it HURTS when i touch it. it just looks gross ,what is it? and what do i do to get rid of it?

Its either an ingrown toenail or you’ve gotten an infection from clipping your toenails to short. If it’s really painful it’s worth a quick visit to the doctor to be safe and sure that you don’t need antibiotics.

my advice is not to wait too long… if you go to the doctor and it is an infection, with anti biotics, the pain will go away after a few days, ingrown toenails won’t. Also, with an ingrown toenail, when you are looking down to your toe, the edge will be more square then round (because of the presence of the nail under the skin). I have had both, and if you wait till the ingrown toenail gets really bad, you’d you have to go to the ER and they would either cut that piece of your nail out or they will take the whole nail. Not trying to scare you, I know from personal experience a couple of years ago. Get it checked out.
