Herpes can look like an oval slightly discolored elevated patch on the skin, varying from the size of a pinhead to 1 cm. in size. It can also be asymptomatic and not be visible at all. It is most communicable when visible, but can be spread even when it is not visible. You can get it on your genitals, mouth, throat, and even eyes. It is most easily transmitted by direct contact with a lesion or the body fluid of an infected individual. Transmission may also occur through skin-to-skin contact. Herpes is life long. There is no cure, but usually does not cause a great deal of problems.
Barrier methods (condoms and dental dams) help to prevent its spread.
