How do you explain different kinds of love to a five year old?

I have a very big, very serious problem. My child is five. His name is Lucian. I have met the love of my life. His name is Roger.

It can definitely be argued that I talk about Roger too much. Lucian must have overheard this. He has been putting on quite a show, acting as if he’s jealous of the attention that I get from Roger. (He gets his share and he also gets plenty of attention from me) He says he wants some time with him because if Roger makes me so happy, I shouldn’t keep him all to myself. I have repeatedly tried to explain that there are different kinds of love. There’s the way you love your parents, a way you love your friends and then there’s boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands and wives and that is very different.

I am still having problems. Lucian has been telling people that Roger is very handsome. Even Roger has asked him not to do this.

I realize that this pseudo infatuation is harmless and that it is completley my fault and yet, it terrifies me. I don’t want someone to hear him talking about this and to misinterpret it. I also believe this is very unhealthy for Lucian. A good number of people have argued that it isn’t and yet, I don’t like it.

Of course, seeing as we only have one word for love in this language, I am finding this extremely hard to explain.
