How do I make friends in a new place?

Okay so I am doing a religous ed. class at my church and I go to a different school then me and I dont now anyone there. I have been going for 3 weeks now and I dont now how to make friends. How do I start a conversation with people , also I am very shy! When I walk people are in groups so I never now where I should go? Please Help[:

I usually start with “Hey, I’m _, I’m new here. What’s your name?” It’s the easiest way to start a conversation. Seriously, there’s not much to be afraid of- what have you got to lose?

Well you can start by saying hi and introducing yourself then maybe if their nice they may introduce theirselves to you and to other people maybe you might be the smartest but u know it is high school there’s pretty much nothing to be afraid of when I moved to a new school I made tons of friend and till this day I’m still friends with themm my best friend is Rosie she’s 17 to u know it’s really easy to make friends :) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
