How can you get a higher B12 level on a vegetarian diet?

HELP! im in a real dilemma! my b12 level is really really low and im a vegetarian. I dont really want to eat dairy and eggs because my cholesterol level is high and my mum said she will force me to either eat fich or red meat if I dont improve anytime soon and I really cant stand the thought of putting a dead animal that was brutally murdered im my mouth. I heard if someone doesnt have a healthy B12 level, they slowly destroy their liver and have birth problems.

B12 is a complex issue. Some vegans who haven’t eaten any animal products or suppliments for decades never become deficient while some people who eat meat daily do.

Animals do not actually make B12, B12 is made by microbes. Cattle get their B12 from soil that they eat that clings to their grass or feed. Microbes in our digestive track make huge amounts of B12 but it does us no good. One theory is that we simply are too clean. If we weren’t so picky about washing our vegetables and our hands after we go to the bathroom we might get all the B12 we need here.

There are forms of B12 in some plant foods but even nutritionists are unsure if we can utilize them.

In general a B12 shot is the best way to treat a deficiency. People who are B12 deficient usually are not deficient because of their diet but because they lack the intrinisic factor needed to absorb the vitamin. If you have been a strict vegan for years you also could have exhausted your supply of this nutrient.

I’d try suppliments first. If they bring your level up than the problem will be solved.

I’m a vegan,

Every now and again I splurge on the sub-lingual B12 tabs. I get them as potent as possible and snap down a few of them.
