How to get my dog to stop staring out the window?

I have a pit bull he’s about 3 years old. he has separation anxiety everytime I walk outside he jumps on the bed and crys at the windows and sometimes he humps the pillows what should I do ?

Answer #1

sk has a good point…Pits need exercise…Lots of exercise!! Does he do anything besides whine at the window and hump the pillows? Like is he destructive when you’re gone? I’m in line with sk on crating, also…Dogs like a “place of their own”…and it’s a rare dog, once it’s learned that the crate isn’t a punishing place, but a place for them to retreat to, LOVE them.

There are lots of ways to deal with SA, and you can find them on the internet…but the number one thing I can tell you is…If he’s getting enough exercise/play, anything you try to do teach him wil come much easier…They can’t “listen” when they have all that pent up energy.

Don’t worry about his humping the pillows…I think that’ll be the first thing that will disappear with more exercise.

take him on walks or go to dog parks. Dogs need exercise! It will make them happier and a little less anxious every time you leave.

Answer #4

take him outside. maybe he doesn’t have separation anxiety from YOU, he might have separation anxiety from the outside world.

Answer #5

close the curtains.

your dog may be behaving like this because they think they are the pack leader or the second in command - looking out the window is surveillance behaviour which is the role of the second in the pack and looking after the pack is the responsibility of the pack leader which could be why he gets anxious when you go away - because he can’t look after you and he thinks it will be his fault if something happens to you. Your dog needs firm leadership and it could be helpful to put him in a room or confined area for periods of time until he gets used to it and realises that you are capable of being left alone! And getting your dog neutered is good too!

Answer #7

‘if he humps the pillows, hes horny introduce him to a female dog (either buy one or find one) and he might want a little more of the outside world since he might feel really trapped’

UGH horrible idea. If he is humping he is horny and the solution is to GET HIM NEUTERED not buy another dog! If you buy a female dog she’ll just get pregnant which means vet bills, health issues for the dog, and a litter of puppies to find homes for. It’s not as easy as it sounds, and hundreds of animals are put to sleep every week in my county alone due to irresponsible breeding.

I work with dogs. My advice is to first get him neutered. This will not only decrease his chances of getting testicular cancer, but it will also tame him from humping things and trying to leave the house to find a female. When animals are not spayed or neutered, their natural instinct is to go find a mate to breed–this could also be part of the reason he is always looking out the window to the outside.

I suggest you take him to the vet and have in actually diagnosed with separation anxiety.

We thought our beagle springer had SA but really he needed more space!!

We gave him to someone who could provide that.

You should also crate train him. He could need his own “den” so to say.

One more thing. Pits are a working breed. They need a JOB! Give him one like getting that tasty treat out of the kong!

PLEASE bring him to a vet!! (some dogs actually require medication but not many! try other options before resorting to medication)

Good gracious. Dogs with Separation anxiety can be trained out of it, but it takes some doing. You have to break them from the signals of you leaving and there are certain steps to do so. There’s a couple good books out there - one I believe is called “I’ll be home soon.” If the dog is not truly destructive then his SA may be mild.

You could try frosting the window with some film or something if you don’t want him looking out.

And dogs do not hump things because they are “horny” – although I concur with the other poster who suggested getting the dog neutered, even neutered dogs will “hump” - other dogs or pillows or whatever, female dogs do it too, it’s got to do with nerves and etc. not just “sex.”
