Why havent schools banned Native American as a costume idea?

I get so embarresed every year at the short tattered skirts and the feather headbands, because I celebrate my culture still and i just get offended, because they wont let kids crossdress or put blackface on but they let them dress up as a whole race/culture?

Answer #1

i agree with that because im 3/4 native american. it is kind of insulting to me because they dont know everything. and if you did like paint your face black or white to be that race your considered racist, well you are at my school. i dont think if you cant paint the face black or white why can you dress like a so called indian, and look like somebody bad.. around where i live they think native americans were bad people. its upsetting.

Answer #2

most of the costumes i see up here are those that sexualize the whole idea

haha this made me wonder what would happen if someone here went to a costume party dresses as a “Maori.” Dressing up as a particular ethicity is kind of strange

I’ve wondered the same thing for over 30 years. One of my home town high school’s mascot was a native American Chief and their nickname is the Big Reds.

I can’t imagine any other ethnic group being used as a mascot. The only other stereotyped ethnic charactiture I know of that is used as a mascot are the Michigan State Spartans and this is classical instead of modern Spartans. Nobody uses mafiosos, gang bangers, red necks, etc. as mascots.

Answer #10

I went to the same school as you did….tho 40 years earlier…really!

Notre Dame Fighting Irish… Minnesota Vikings… Boston Celtics… New England Patriots… UNLV Running Rebels… Ole Miss Rebels… New York Knickerbockers and the New York Yankees both refer to the Dutch colonists who settled the area… Syracuse Orangemen… the orange order were a group of Williamite rebels who started a fraternity that had branches all over the the British commonwealth of nations and the United States… one derogatory term applied to them was Redneck… where we get the term. The fraternal colors were Orange and Navy Blue. All these off the top of my head… with time I am sure I could find more.

Answer #13

Almost forgot… Montreal Canadiens or the Habs for Les Habitants referring to the original French colonists of Canada… which brings to mind the Ragin’ Cajuns of The University of Louisina at Lafayette.

Answer #14

I don’t understand the animosity… I see the use of a culture for a mascot as a sign of respect or at the least… admiration. Of course the depiction of the group is going to be one engaging in competiion…which lends itself to war paint… fighting stances etc. I don’t think the intention is to portray the culture as one deprived of civility… but The Spelling Sequoyahns is just as likely not to be used as The Formulating Newtons when it comes to athletic team names.

Answer #15

I am Irish and every year millions of people around the world dress in green, talk like the leprechaun from Lucky Charms cereal, and drink till they throw up because that is what Irish means to them. I am not affended. I don’t know everything about other cultures and I am sure that on occassion I may even insult one purely through my ignorance.

Answer #16

Yes. But foreigners did not come to Ireland, kill off the entire population, colonize the land AND THEN dress like the traditional Irish. A little sensitivity might not be a bad thing given that an entire culture was practically wiped off the continent.
