Strong American Schools

Well, to be blunt, they are better than the US at least in the area of public education which is what the commercial is talking about. It’s a dose of reality that should make us want to improve our school system, not whine about how hanging the US flag below that of other countries is unpatriotic. We have a culture that says kids who are good at learning and spend their time studying science, math, and technology are geeks and nerds. Meanwhile, in China and Russia, it is the engineer, not the athlete or the musician, whose path people try to pursue.

I’m glad they mentioned Finland in this commercial. Finland is a good example of a country who had a crappy public education system a while ago, realized it was falling behind, and took measures to fix the problem. Granted, it’s easier for a country like Finland to change its education system, but the US can do it too. Fortunately, awareness about the problem is spreading rapidly and there are many groups gaining bipartisan support to improve American education and competitiveness. I remain optimistic.
