Is it normal for gums to be swollen and painful?

Lately, I have troubles with a certain tooth, and it does have a larger cavity now that a piece has falling out. I do have a appt on March 21st…It’s not soon enough for me but that’s as soon as it is for them. I noticed something was up with my gums when I ran my tongue around my teeth on the lower side left. I noticed that a bit of my gums was up to my teeth! Between the crack, my teeth are still together. It’s painful to touch, but not enough to make me go ow, just enough I know it hurts. Do gums sometimes do that, or am I in trouble here with my mouth? I’m thinking this may result in a pulled tooth (Which honestly, I hope they do)
