PETA asking ben & jerry's to use breast milk in ice cream?

Ok, I think PETA has gone too far…I read on msn.com this morning that they are asking Ben and Jerry’s ( the ice cream company) to start using human milk instead of cows milk to make the ice cream…what do you think of that!!!???

Answer #1

This was started in Switzerland.

“let’s see how long they can endure sitting there tied up to milking machines), they would see things a different way.”

I believe, ichibanarky, that is EXACTLY the point. While I support PETA in many of their actions, they often put something “out there” to receive comments such as yours. This suggestion by PETA will help to highlight the horrors of factory farming.

Milking machines and the treatment animals receive is something we WOULD NEVER want to inflict on humans.

I do not believe it is “fair enough” to continue factory farming because there are healthy, non-animal products out there. It is about realizing that we don’t have to ABUSE the animals in the process of using them.

And before anyone jumps down my throat, there is a HUGE difference between factory farming and private farming. Just as there is a HUGE difference between puppymills and responsible breeders.

I don’t know…I worked on a dairy for several years in my young days…Early morning call the cows in from pasture…milking done by 9 am…cows being turned loose when they were done…During milking they were fed grain from a self filling bin…4:00…call cows in again…they come very willing…and go thru the same process…It’s not like you have to go out and rope them to come in…the older ones line up before it’s time to milk.

I bottle fed calves…in clean stalls, the cows had to be clean, the dairy had to be clean. The dariyman’s livelihood depends on healthy cows…and another news flash…non-happy cows hold on to their milk…Even a new person doing the milking will cause a huge deficit in the milk production.

I’m sure that our thoughts as “what it might be like to be hooked to a milking machine” are VASTLY different that what the cows think. Cows have lots of time…new mother’s don’t…but I’m sure if the price was right, there’d be some who’d “hook up” just for the bucks.

I doubt PETA’s “suggestion” wil do much to bring awareness to the dairy cows…tho it does give people a little awareness of their “kookier” side.

I think it’s a better idea than tying cows up in concrete stalls with no room to even turn around to be sucked dry of their milk every day.

Answer #4

Well, I don’t know if Palin is against PETA… But I bet Peta is against Palin.

Answer #5

Human milk in ice cream? Next up, human hair in wool products (yuck), and human meat in STEAK…

errr… wait… that’s not a good idea… is it?

Answer #6

Let’s face it, the human digestive system is better suited for human milk than cow’s milk. Besides, in these hard economic times, it might give some women the opportunity to make a few extra bucks

Answer #7

I guess they are concerned about animal rights.

Perhaps if they were the ones donating their own breast milk (let’s see how long they can endure sitting there tied up to milking machines), they would see things a different way.

Many ice creams these days are soy-based - perfect for vegan diets. I think that’s fair enough.

Answer #8

…pretty sure the whole thing is a peta publicity stunt.

…or maybe not. who knows. peta is pretty crazy.

Answer #9

utopia - try as you might, you can’t change the world - you can only change your part in it.

I’m as much for animal rights as anybody. I support PETA and I foster homeless animals. I prefer not to eat meat and I don’t wear fur or leather.

But that’s just me. I can do my own part, but I can’t change the world.

People are not going to take the place of cows just because someone tells them it’s cruel.

This whole idea of using human milk is ludicrous, and all PETA is doing right now, is using ridiculous propaganda to prove a point that is already blatantly obvious to anyone who has a functioning brain.

ya its true…but the VP or someone from the company said they are not going to use breast milk..here is a small tid-bit I got off the internet

PETA asks Ben & Jerry’s to use breast milk 20 hours ago

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Ice cream made from breast milk? That’s what the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Ice Cream to consider making.

The Virginia-based nonprofit group sent a letter to company co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield on Tuesday asking them to use human breast milk instead of cow’s milk in their products.

PETA said the health of consumers and cows would benefit from the switch.

Ben & Jerry’s spokesman Rob Michalak said the company applauds PETA’s creative approach to bring attention to an issue, but believes that a mother’s milk is best used by a child.

underwaterophelia …It only takes about 45 minutes to milk a cow…and they’re eating grain every minute they are in there…loving the hell out of it…If you had 10 gallons (that’s 80 pounds) of milk hanging in YOUR udder, you’d probably LIKE having it taken…

So…1 1/2 hours a day, eating grain and being relieved of a full udder, spending the rest of day in pasture or self feeding on silage…no wonder they line up before it’s time.
