To go along with what Colleen said, im not sure if the guidelines are different in different countries or even states, but in my state the minimum a woman must stay in the hospital is 48 hours after giving birth v@ginally, and 72 hours after having a c-section.
The mother? About 24 hours if everything goes well, but the baby stays in the hospital until it reaches a certain birth weight or health requirements.
