what things can i give my hamster to play with? im going to get one this week

Answer #1

A hamster wheel is very important (they love that). Then my friends hamster seems to likes to run around in one of those hamster balls.

Then they like to crawl through tunnels and some hamster chew toys also works well (you can buy them at pet shops).

Haha, it’s odd that it would eat it’s own leg. It must have had an itch and bitten it,it then would become infected and the hamster would continue biting til it eventually fell off, and a hamster would eat a dead foot to keep it’s cage clean. As for toys, it will probably eat the toilet paper roll, but it should be fine as long as there’s no plastic lining it. I wouldn’t recommend plastic play tubes, they are a pain to clean all the time. They don’t need much more to play with if you have the rolls and wheel, though, maybe even the house, too. What the little guy’ll love is new treats and lots of handling. They LOVE new things to taste and experiment with, and it can be as simple as half an egg shell, the occasionally carrot or corn piece, or even a couple of meal worms if you’re really bold. He’ll love it. A tip for you, leave him alone the first day so he can get used to his new home, and after handle him lots as he grows up (or whatever) so he becomes used to you and likes to be held.

As for your dog eating the hamster, keep the cage up away from the floor out of reach, and become angry and scold the puppy if he touches the hamster ball. He can sniff, but he may play too rough and kill it. NEVER let the puppy too close when the hamster is out of the cage, he may snap at it and it only takes once. But the puppy can watch. Don’t always scold the puppy, either; you don’t want him to hate the hamster. Pet the puppy and help him realize that the hamster is a part of the familly, too, now. My dog was jealous of a gerbil I had, and I think that’s why she opened the cage and ate half of it. She knew I loved it, and she even left the bottom half right out my bedroom door. Just remember if something happens, your puppy still loves you, and that he probably didn’t mean it. Though mine did. >.< But I still love her.
