Hi, German pronunciation is a little difficult for English native speakers, because German has got some sounds that just don’t exist in the English language. Also, the letters do not always represent the same sounds as they do in English words (Example: German “nein” is pronounced like “nine” in English). You should find a podcast or search the tubes for native speakers who read out text.

The other thing that may be difficult is that all German words have a grammatical gender (male, female or neutral) and these are often illogical and sometimes different from the natural gender of the object. So there are three different translations of “the”: “der”, “die” and “das”. And “the girl” is “das Mädchen” (neutral grammatical gender, female natural gender). Also a different gender can shift the meaning of a Word. For examlpe “die See” is the sea, “der See” is the lake. Always learn nouns with the article.

Another thing that irritates people from all other countries are German composed nouns. The are theoretically endless. A German could construct a Word that takes a complete line or even an entire page. Here’s how they look: Baum = tree. Baumhaus = tree-house. Baumhausdach = roof of a tree-house. Baumhausdachziegel = A tile on the roof of a tree-house. Baumhausdachziegelbruch= A break in a tile on the roof of a tree-house.

When you arrange with those small difficulties, learning German is fun.
