How do you go about 'divorcing' your parents?

(terminating their rights as a parent to you)? Is it possible in the UK?

Answer #1

A divorce is between two people who were married. To get emancipated from your parents you would have to go to a courthouse and provide a good reason as to why you want to be emancipated. If you arent suffering with an abusive home, parents who abuse dr.ugs or alcohol, etc. I suggest you just suck it up and stay a kid as lng as you can. As soon as your emancipated your on your own…how are you going to pay bills and take care of yourself?

Answer #2

i know that its just the way my nan put it to me and i didnt know how else to say it ha:) i already live away from my family, im 16 n i have my own house, im on sick benefits due to extreme anxiety which is because of the way my mum has treated me and other on goings in my life. i dont support myself, but the govournment does, until im able to work that is. so technicaly, i just want to remove their labels as ‘parents’. what sort of reasons would the courthouse do it? like….does it have to be on-going abuse or can it be abuse in the past..that you cant actually prove?

Answer #3

They don’t “ remove their labels as ‘parents’” …an emaciation simply states that you are an adult and responsible for yourself. Your parents will always be your parents - nothing can change that.

Answer #4

well iv been told that you can get their rights totally terminated so their not ur parents.

Answer #5

I remember seeing something on telly and they did say they’ve ‘divorced’ their parents, not exactly sure what they meant though.

Answer #6

*emancipation - mind my typo. Becoming emancipated does remove their rights, but it doesn’t remove them as your parents…no matter what you do, they are always going to be your parents - it’s a biological thing, not a legal one.

Answer #7

yeh biologicaly unfortunately i cant get away from that, but like wen u get adopted ur parents rights have been terminated all that stuff….i want to be in that situation, also because a woman who used to foster me said shed love to adopt me if i do go through with it. i want that to happen. i dnt even no if u can be ‘adopted’ at 16 or over but thats what i want. i want no connection to my mum especially….i just want the rights totaly terminated so all ties are broken if you get me. any idea how to go about it though ?

Answer #8

You’re 16 - I believe that in the UK, that qualifies you as an adult and you can make your own decisions - don’t hold me to that, though, I could be wrong. If you became emancipated, your parents would have no legal jurisdiction over you.

Answer #9

It does and i live away from home anyway . whats juris diction?

Answer #10

It means they have no authority over you - they can’t stop you from doing whatever you want.

Answer #11

Oh. I just want rid.
