Dealing with nightshifts
What’s the best way to deal with a nightshift from 11pm to 7 am ? Lots of Coffee and sleep in the afternoon ? Are there going to b any negative effects if I do that for 2 months ? Thank you
I read in an article a couple of months ago the dangers of working the night shift because it messes you body all up and I found this on the internet: “Compared with day workers, night workers are five times more likely to get stomach ulcers, twice as likely to smoke cigarettes or use stimulants, and are at greater risk for high blood pressure, heart attack, and breast cancer. And if you have kids, your divorce risk is three to six times higher than normal. “
Anyways heres some steps for attempting to get used to the night shift: Step1 Buy dark shades for your bedroom or a sleeping mask to block out the sunlight. Also, get some ear plugs to block out the sounds of the day. Your body has been trained to be up during the light and sleep in the dark; it is not a habit broken easily.
Step2 Disconnect the door bell and the phone. You must get your rest during the day even though others are awake. Tell people and your children to only call your cell phone for emergencies during certain daytime hours.
Step3 Prioritize your day and put sleep at the top of your list. You will not be of use to anyone while sleep deprived. It is dangerous to drive or operate certain machinery while lacking sleep.
Step4 Give yourself time to adjust. Try to stay away from caffeine close to your bed time and from sleeping aids during the day. Your body can change its sleeping habits if given enough time.
Step5 Refrain from taking naps during break time at work. This will make it harder for you to sleep when you get home. It’s a vicious cycle to break, so you’re better off not to start it.
Step6 Get into a routine of going to sleep when you come home from work. Relax with a book or a warm glass of milk. Don’t start cleaning up the house or writing bills. Let your mind settle and be calm.
Step7 Seek a doctor’s advice if you are not able to sleep while on the night shift. They may have advice and suggestions to help you through the adjustment.
Night shifts go against your circadian rythm or the time your body tried to rest and be awake.
When I had to work night shifts I did my best to continue staying up at night and sleeping in the day on my days off. I think changing back and forth is harder on you than a reverse sleep schedule.
Now my night shifts are occasional. I have to work all night when something goes wrong at work. In my case after I work all night I generally take a nap then get up so that I’ll be able to fall asleep at my normal time after that. I have on occasion worked 36+ hour shifts and when you are up this long you really need serous sleep.
