Is it a crazy dream to want to live a self-sufficient lifestyle when I am older?

Grow most of my own fruits, vegetables and other food. Raise chickens and turkeys for eggs and meat. When I am older I really just want to live in the country like that

Answer #1

Well that sounds like somewhat of a rural farmer. That would be great! If you have your own organic livestock and vegetation in your backyard :) You could sell or give some to your neighbors. If we all grew food in our backyards we could prevent a food shortage that will most likely happen in 50 years.

Answer #2

I would love to have sort of a commune lifestyle, growing crops and sharing them with my neighbors and what i cant grow they do and we all just live off our hard work… i just think having the funds to start it might be difficult

Answer #3

You should look into ecovillages. They are the modern equivalent to the communes of the ‘60’s.

Answer #4

You might include “co-housing” in that search, too. It is a much broader term, but it includes what you’re describing..

Answer #5

It isn’t crazy at all. I want to do the same thing. After I finish my last two years of college, I either want to live in a tent and travel on foot to various places, or move to France or England and see what happens there.

Answer #6

It’s fine……Different strokes for different folks…

Answer #7

I’ve wanted that sort of lifestyle for some time… it just seems unattainable because of money. Ido plan to move to the country after finish university or after I get married or move out. But no way, it might not be as common of a dream but it is in no way weird.
