What can happen when you have a cold sore on your lip and have a bath?

When your cold sore touches the bath water, could it linger in the water and give genital herpes?

Answer #1

I highly doubt it…unless it was SERIOUS.

Answer #2

lol wth? no?

Answer #3

unless you have mouth herpes, this makes no sence. lmfao

Answer #4

a cold sore is herpes. just on your mouth.

Answer #5

No. A cold sore is not exactly the same thing as herpes.

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease. The only way to get genital herpes, is if you come in contact with someone who has it.

Answer #6

good. aha :)

Answer #7

As far as I know the herpes virus that causes cold sores is different from the one that causes genital herpes. If this were even possible, you’d have to believe that EVERYONE who has a cold sore also has herpes. Relax, honey. =]

Answer #8

Not exactly. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) most often causes herpes infections of the mouth and lips. However you must get that from sexual contact, such as oral sex. Just because you have a cold sore, doesn’t mean you have herpes. Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease. Kids, or virgins get cold sores sometimes, so obviously, a simple cold sore isn’t exactly herpes (a sexually transmitted disease).

Answer #9

I mean I know it’s a different strain, but if you see a person with a cold sore you know they forever have herpes of the mouth. It’s just the idea of it getting there and mutating somehow and being ‘there’ it’s just creepy. You’re sureeeeeeee? :)

Answer #10

Okay I trust you, I’ve just heard that cold sores are a strain of herpes. Thanks

Answer #11

Fo sho, girl. ;] i’d say you’re as safe as you possibly can be. Lol

Answer #12

I’ve heard that too, but I just don’t see how kids and virgins can have “herpes”. I’ve had a cold sore before, but I sure didn’t have herpes. Cold sores can be caused by stress, trauma to to mouth area, allergic reaction, etc…

Answer #13

Ummm,no. However if you do have a cold sore in your mouth and give someone oral sex they could get the herpes virus down there.

Answer #14

THAT’s what I was thinking. if it works like that then why not how i mentioned?

Answer #15

I think I remember discussing this with my doctor. She mentioned that a cold sore was usually caused by herpes; in which case, once you got a cold sore, you had herpes for life.

Now in your example specifically, I’m going to hypothesize and say that the virus cannot thrive in the water temperature and it needs a host fairly quickly. In theory, the virus cannot move without you moving it and considering the size of this virus, well, I think you can assume the likelihood of something like this happening.

Another thing, usually, you can get infected with genital herpes on your lips or anywhere else on your body. Depending on the kind of herpes you have is what concludes whether someone else can get genital herpes or not. I’m not sure about the actual form of the herpes mutating, that I’ll have to look into myself.

I hope this answers your question :)

Answer #16

Nope. Your good.

Answer #17

i have a cold sore right now :(

Answer #18

Because it can’t be transmitted through water.

Answer #19

Actually that is not entirely true A cold sore IS herpes.Herpes 1 See below:

“ Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is usually associated with infections of the lips, mouth, and face. It is the most common herpes simplex virus and is usually acquired in childhood. HSV-1 often causes lesions inside the mouth such as cold sores (fever blisters) and is transmitted by contact with infected saliva. By adulthood, up to 90% of individuals will have antibodies to HSV-1.

  • Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) is sexually transmitted. Symptoms include genital ulcers or sores. In addition to oral and genital lesions, the virus can also lead to complications such as meningoencephalitis (infection of the lining of the brain and the brain itself) or cause infection of the eye – in particular the conjunctiva, and cornea. However, some people have HSV-2 but do not display symptoms. Up to 30% of U.S. adults have antibodies against HSV-2. Cross-infection of type 1 and 2 viruses may occur from oral-genital contact.” Source(s): Medline Plus Medical Encyclopedia provided this nice concise definition!
Answer #20

Do your homework! You do not usually get herpes 1 from sex AT ALL! It is usually acquired during childhood from an infection(NOT ORAL SEX) Don’t believe everything someone tells you.

Answer #21

In a nutshell Cold Sores ARE Herpes 1 and almost always do not come from sex but from a mouth infection. Most people will aquire antibodies to it by adulthood.

Answer #22

In general getting herpes requires skin to skin contact. I did manage to catch cold sores from trying another trombone player’s mouthpiece just before he had an outbreak. You do not need to worry about contracting genital herpes taking a bath while having a cold sore. It is possible to get genital herpes from HSV-1 but extremely rare and probably impossible without oral genital contact.
