Can I be bipolar?

if my mother is bipolar how much of a chance do I have to be like that?

Answer #1

vicki is right saying “None of us have to be like our parents” BUT being bipolar is not something you can control. if that was the case no one would be bipolar. there is a chance you might be bipolar.

Answer #2

There is a definite genetic link, but there’s no way to give you a certain percentage probability of you being bipolar, it doesnt work that way… There’s environmental triggers and just a bunch of stuff they dont really know… Dont worry about it too much, if it happens then you can deal with it then (and even if you’re bipolar doesnt mean you will turn out like your mother…)

Answer #3

There is no for sure answer yet if you get bipolar from genetics because its such a complicated disorder, here’s an article:

“There is, in fact, such a long history of research into the genetic aspects of BD that , in 1997, the Department of Pshychiatry at the Washington University (St. Louis) School of Medicine (WUSM-SL) reiterated categorically that “BD has been shown to have a genetic susceptibility,” but that, because it is such a complex disorder, the mapping of the exact genetic process remains incomplete” http://www.bipolarworld.net/Bipolar%20Disorder/Articles/genetics.htm

Answer #4

depends bipolar can be passed thru genetics bu certian things set it off, bipolar runs in my family, my sister got it, I think I got it last year (becuas ei had all the extreme emotional symtoms and emotional imbalance) it comes from both my mum and dads side, and ususaly its gets set off, well my sister was properly diagnosed with it when she was seeing the doctor about anorexia, and me I never told anyone about my dramatic mood swings, severe depression e.c.t but my point is bipolar is usualy set off if it runs in the family

Answer #5
