Atkins phase?

Anybody have any idea what happened to the atkins dieting craze a few years ago? My mother still swears by it but whenever she takes a small break from the diet she packs on the pounds very very quickly, I want to convince her to take up some cardio but she wont here it, anybody know anymore about it?

Dr Robert Atkins died at 72 which isn’t a bad run. He died of a head injury after a fall.

Atkins proponents did admit that Dr. Atkins did previously suffer cardiac arrest but attributed the cause to an infection unrelated to diet. Reports did surface that Dr. Atkins did previously suffer a heart attack, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. He wasn’t exactly the picture of health but he was a pretty old man. Since I’ll probably work until I’m 70 (some unwise investments, a divorce, the tech bubble bursting, and the sub-prime mortgage meltdown have set me back a bit) I hope to be in robust health longer than Dr. Atkins managed.

Atkins’ golf teacher commented that Dr. Atkins was so bad off he could no longer bend over to pick up his own golf ball so someone had to retreive it for him.

People do loose a lot of weight on Atkins’ diet and often the weight loss does improve their risk factors but it is an unsustainable diet in the long run and dieters who do not learn how to eat healthy quickly gain the weight back.

I myself don’t eat a lot of carbs as my body gets cranky when I do and starts to get a bit fat. I run every day and try to eat low carb - I have pretty much cut out white bread, rice, and pasta. It works for me but I think the craze has just died down a bit like any other diet I guess. People get bored and want to hear something new and different but I think it’s an effective diet if done sensibly and not to the extreme of cutting out ALL carbs. You need a diet that is sustainable over a long period :)

I’m a Diet Aide at a hospital and work with nutrition all the time. This diet is too strict. Carbs can be healthy too. She should chose products with whole grain and for sweet items fruit is best. If you want to lose weight and be healthy it doesn’t make sense to have a diet where you aren’t allowed fruit and certain vegetables but can eat an as much meat, cheese and eggs. In the long run this will give her heart problems.

The reason it doesn’t work, is because you are intentially MALNOURISHING your body. That’s why the weight loss is so severe, and for the most part, only temporary…

You DO know the creator of the ‘Atkins Diet’ is DEAD now, right?
