Growing up I was a nerd. I was constantly picked on because of my "nappy" hair and glasses. I have a grand total of 1 friend who I have had all of my life. I've heard the old saying if you find one true friend then you are better off thing and trust me I believe it. The problem is that when speaking to someone I tend to get nervous and uncomfortable. People often misconstrue this behavior for snobbery or rudeness. I go through great lengths just to avoid seeing people e.g. not walking anywhere, not standing in lines, at my college I dont eat in the cafeteria even if im starving. I know this behavior is unhealthy especially for someone who wants to be a psychiatrist, a career that is focused on being amicable and conversing with people. Ok all you funadvice veterans, I need your help on this one! How can I becaome more social without overwhelming myself???
