American Ancestry Question

OK I’ll try to explain this as best I can. I hear Americans say that they are German, Polish, Mexican etc. (I’m 1/4 Polish and 3/4 German but live in Wisconsin) If I moved to Germany tomorrow (I’m not!) and people asked me about my ancestors would I say I’m German OR I’m American. Saying I’m American would be a weird way to say what you are. Because Americans are so varied. Just thought of that. What do you think?

Answer #1

Unless your parents were born outside the U.S. I would just stick with saying your American. My dads family came over from Italy in the 1600’s and my mom’s from Italy in the late 1800’s but if I went to Italy I wouldn’t tell the people I’m Italian.

Think about it the other way. If a person your age, who was born in germany, with ancestors from america, called himself american, he would probably be laughed at.
