There is no way to send an adult to rehab without their consent. I would seriously think about this, once the police get involved there is no guarantee what will happen, they could end up going to jail… In addition, sending a person to rehab unwillingly is unlikely to help them. Until an addict wants help they arent going to get better. They may go to rehab, they may sober up for that period of time. But until they are truly commited to staying sober it is unlikely to last long.

Sorry to say but you can get a person into rehab only if the family goes along with it…Its called “Baker Act”. If 2 or more people say that the person has a “problem” and that they seem like “they are hurting themselves”? you can have them put in a hospital, even if they are an adult!

Dear vultureofculture,

Well most addicts do not want treatment. Most believe they are able to live with this disease. If they are drinking and driving you need to report this.

You probably will be saving his life as well as those he will kill when he hits them.

Call the police when you know he is on the road is a good idea.

Sometimes a judge will order rehab as part of his fine.

Many times this is what it takes to get them there plus…like I said you have to get him off the road before there is a terrible accident.

Sue…good luck

There is such a thing as an intervention… not exactly sure how that works… you might be able to research it online… and type different things in , concerning this, and perhaps you will be able to pull up more resources, and message boards, with advice from others in the same boat…

Also, if you believe in prayer, here are some links, where you can post a prayer request for your friend… God can work.. when nothing else will.
