Is there a way to help someone cope with having an addictive personality?

Answer #1

There’s no actual thing as an addicted personality. Anyhow, people who have addictions need to actually want help. When they seek help, there’s therapists or self-help groups that tend to be helpful. Honestly, I personally think they simply replace healthier addictions with not so healthy ones (such as AA, I mean it’s basically replacing religious/cult worship with alcohol or dr.ugs).

Does it apply to anyone and any addiction? I have so many its not even funny. Maybe I’m just compulsive or something. I can become addicted to anything relatively quickly. Sorry don’t know exactly how to explain ir

Answer #3

To actually be diagnosed with an addiction, the addiction has to be significantly impairing and it is something that one needs to feel normal, it’s slightly difference from compulsive actions. For example, I have OCD, I compulsively wash my hands. It can be viewed as an addiction, but it’s more of a compulsive thing. I mean honestly (and this seems beyond intuitive) but the only way to stop engaging in compulsive behaviors is to simply stop the behaviors. I know that when i get stressed out my OCD flares up. And so I have to talk myself through it when I want to wash my hands or take a shower for the 10th time. And eventually the urge subsides. When it’s an addiction, it’s a little more complicated. The urge won’t subside in the same way. But it does get better. One simply has to distract and engage in healthier behaviors.

Thx that was of great help. I do appreciate it :-)

Answer #5

Some get better with therapy but i believe to really overcome any addiction the person should really realize it and try hard( it’s really up to them!). I think this cause my uncle was addicted to dru8s, we all tried our best to help him, we sent him to rehab but he got worse. but now he his better only after he went to coma and realized the pain he caused our family especially to my grandma. Now, he is really sober and doesn’t even drink in parties!!!

Answer #6

That’s great

Answer #7

Unfortunately the only person who can truly help an addict and begin the battle against their addictions, is the addict themselves.

You can literally take everthing away from them, pay for the best therapy and rehab in the world, do everything in your power to get them to quit, but unless they really want too quit and made the decision on their own - it will never work.

Answer #8

If addiction is bad than of course it is a bad habit. If it is good, you can continue with it.
