Do I need to go to the dentist?

Ok my question is about my teeth. I do admit I have a nice smile… I like it. And I don’t really think my front teeth are too bad. BUT… my back teeth are sorta bad. The one at the very back on the left has a crack in it it happened like a year or more ago when I was eating candy. I’ve NEVER been to a dentist in my life… I don’t like them at all. The tooth that cracked doesn’t bother me at all, like it doesn’t hurt or anything. I’m sure I also have some cavities not in the front… around the back. So do I really need to go get my teeth fixed? What could happen if I leave the cavities and the cracked tooth go? Is there anything you can do to fix them yourself I doubt it but I figured I’d ask that just to make sure?

Thanks for the help!!

The fact that your cracked tooth doesn’t bother you at all is not a good sign, it just means you have gotten used to it and it and the nerve has probably died. This means it is more susceptible to infections underneath the tooth in the gum area. The first stage of gum disease is gingivits (red, irritated, bleeding gums) but if it progresses to periodontitis, a lot of people wont feel irritation anymore. Periodontitis is when the bone starts to get eaten away by bacteria that is trapped in the gums (which is why flossing is a must). When the bone is gone, there is nothing you can do to get it back and that is when you see recession in your gum line.

There is a point at which a cavity cannot be reversed, even with brushing. At that point if you get to the dentist in time you may only need a filling, but if the cavity has reached the pulp of the tooth you will need a root canal.

Almost everyone has wisdom teeth. If you do not have enough room in your mouth for them, they need to be removed. If not, they can become impacted in the bone and cause infection and even damage the teeth next to it if it goes untreated for too long.

I know it must be scary if you have never been to a dentist to go for the first time, but really they are there to help you. There are all sorts of pain management now a days if you are anxious when you go in. They can give you nitrous to relax you while they work on you. I can’t tell you without looking at your mouth what kind of treatment you would need, but your dentist would be able to explain it all to you so you can understand how important it is to make your mouth as healthy as possible. It will benefit you greatly and I hope you decide to go.

there is nothing you can do by yourself. As for the cracked tooth you can leave it if you want. And you should get a checkup for the cavities cause sooner or later the cavaties will destroy your teeth. its always good to go at least once a year to see if anything is wrong.

Yes the cavities will get worse, your teeth will rot from the inside, and then the routine dental work will not only get more painful but it will get expensive. You should see a dentist as soon as possible. I dont know if I’ve just been lucky but I’ve never had issues at the dentists office. I had my wisdom teeth removed and it didnt even hurt (trick is to take the pain killers they give you before the anesthesia wears off and keep taking them every 6 hours…)

How do you know if you don’t like dentists if you have never been to one? I bet you’ve heard a ton of horror stories about them. I have a couple I could share, but I will spare you the agony.

One thing I discovered is that if I take care of my teeth by brushing and flossing and get a proffessional cleaning twice a year I won’t have anymore painful experiences at the dentist.
