Is it wrong to want to be a professional musician when I'm older?

The only thing I really want to do for the rest of my life is be in a crappy underground band with some friends and earn enough money to survive. Do I have no chance of achieving this since I want it? So many “rockstars” out there say that they never expected to be doing what they are doing and that it just kind of happened. They say that they dreamed of it but never though about it seriously because they though for sure it could not happen.. Does this mean its wrong to want to do this since your life never turns out how you want it or imagine it? I don’t care about money or fame or anything..I could go on and on about my good intentions for why I want to be in a band..love of music, inspiring other girls, and the whole life of living in a van and just making music with friends. I’m scared this can never happen since I just assume it will! (I try so hard not to assume that!) but I can’t see myself doing anything else. What do you think, musicians?

Answer #1

By the way I am 17 years old.

Answer #2

Well I don’t see why would that be wrong.

Answer #3

Of course it’s not wrong, but as you get older your wants could change and you may decide you want something more secure and still have music as side gig. Once a musician always a musician I believe.

Answer #4

i dont see any thing wrong with it. they make ok money. not only that but if you have a job you really enjoy you will never work a day in your life!

Answer #5

No it’s not wrong. Realistic? Not so much. There are so many bands out there, so many teenagers hoping to be musicians in the future. In the end, how many actually make it? Very few. I know many bands who definitely do not make enough to even “get by”. So I would say, be sure you have something on the side, perhaps your education. You could easily change your mind.

Answer #6

Very true. You always wanna keep your dreams in your front pocket, but in the mean time you need money in your back pocket.
