Is it wrong for a 20 year old student to go out with her professor who's in his mid 30's?

Their difference between their ages is not a problem, but the difference between their institutional roles and power is. It’s wrong for him to ask her out while she’s in his class. Her response, and whatever follows between them, could easily affect (positively or negatively) how he sees her as his student, and the grade he gives her, even if he doesn’t intend for it to do so.

When she is no longer a student there (or he no longer teaches there), then it’s fine.

Being romantically involved with someone you have authority over is ill advised in any situation. It does happen though. I knew a voice teacher who dated one of her students. A college conductor I knew dated a number of students in the orchestra. These were both “open secrets” where it was widely known but never officially acknowledged since it was against policy and acknowledging them would require administration to address them.

To add, no matter how much of a connection there is, as well as love, there should never be a relationship between teacher and student.
