Honestly, it depends on the sex, appearance, and age of the stranger. A well-dressed older woman is probably not going to send out the same sort of alarm signals as a 20-year-old guy who looks like he lives on the street. Whether we like it or not, perception dictates our initial reactions. What crzycalie14 described is the flight or fight reaction. Which is what we feel when we're scared. Which is the reaction we think about when we think stranger. Most people think a scary man. You probably wouldnt react like that if it was a 3 year old kid.
On guard...I live in Montana...friendly and helpful are how we are raised to be....all small towns here. However, I've also lived in the city...I'd stop, but I'd be on guard.
Mostly weirded out. Sometimes scared. But, if the person seems trustable maybe even flattered it would all depend on why and whom.
Are hands get sweaty, are feet get cold and the little hairs on the back of are neck stand up.
