Is Windows Vista worth upgrading to?

My computer runs XP right now, a lot of my friends have windows 7 on their laptops, but my dad’s giving me the option to upgrade to Vista. I’d really like something easier, (my computer’s 6 years old) but I read some bad reviews. Do you think it’s worth it?

Answer #1

vista? no thats a horrible OS. if you want to upgrade go with window 7.

Answer #2

Ah, really? Thanks for telling me. My dad’s really only giving me the opportunity to upgrade to Vista, maybe 7 is more expensive, I didn’t really ask but alright. I think I’ll stick with XP.

Answer #3

Compared to Xp, I do think it is better. Although, Windows 7 is the best OS compared to other known OS’s.

Answer #4

No, don’t.

If you own an old PC, then you should either operate it on XP or go to W7. Vista makes your computer feel incredibly slow. I had a box in my office that was fast on XP, a snail on Vista and acceptably fast on W7.

If you buy a new one, buy it with W7.

For a 6-year old PC, I don’t recommend Vista unless you want to spend hours tweaking the OS to work at a decent speed on your PC. I had Vista on a 6-year old machine and although it was fast, games and HD videos were very laggy because Vista is a giant resource hog. Hell, I waited 3-4 minutes to have it boot me up into the Desktop at times, and the UAC’s dim feature really f**ked up the machine when it would appear 2 minutes later. :P

On a 6-year old machine, I’d definitely stick with Windows XP SP3 or even play around with Ubuntu 10.10 (free of course). If you however, do want Vista, go for it. Just be aware that you may find the speed of Vista a bit underperformed.

Just to give you a clue about how slow my PC was: Intel P4 2.66GHz (Overclocked at 2.84GHz) 2GB DDR 400MHz Kingston RAM (maxed out on Motherboard) nVidia Geforce4 MX 4000 128MB DDR graphics Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

When I built it in 2004, it was the sh*t. Played all the latest games and was super quick. The PC cost about $500 back then. Now, I can barely sell it for $20. :P Most of the scores on Vista’s WEI were in the 2.1 to 3.8 with the highest going to the CPU when it was overclocked. So, I hope that gave you a small perspective on what your PC would be like if you got Vista.
