What are some pros and cons of upgrading from Vista to Windows 7?

my mom is upgrading the laptop and I’m kind of worried bc I could’ve sworn that people said that you should stay with vista.

I’ve personally never used Vista and I’m using 7 right now. I’ve used 95, 98, and XP and I now use 7 and I think it’s the best of all I’ve used. However, I really think it’s a matter of choice and preference :)

W7 and Vista are very similar “inside”. But W7 is the better version. I had an old PC in my office with vista on it and it was slow as a snail. You click a program, you go fetch a coffee, the machine is done processing the click when you return from the kitchen. Kind like that. After I upgraded it to W7 the old box was working all right. It still wasn’t a rocket, but it was usable.

W7 will calculate slower (so if you make it calculate some complicated database query it will be slower than vista) but it has improved user interaction. So it will do all the everyday stuff like opening program windows and moving the mouse arrow faster.

If your machine is old and slow, be sure to switch off all the jingles and eye-candy (like transparent window frames and all that other stuff that you don’t really need) in the appearance menu.

Vista was almost a “beta” version of Windows 7. Win7 looks and feels very similar, but with a LOT of the kinks worked out. As rotten said tho, Win7 does take a few more resources. So you are going to be trading stability for a bit of speed. But if your computer is newer, came with Vista, and it runs pretty fast now you may not even notice a speed difference. Personally I wont use Vista, give me Xp Pro or Win7.
