Why was it important to navigate the Mississippi River?

When the Pinckney’s Treaty was signed with Spain on October 27, 1795, it gave American rights to navigate the entire Mississippi River. Why was it important to explore it? Just for trade or something?

This was important to the farmers and merchants who lived in Kentucky and Tennessee and to the settlers of the Ohio Valley, who now could ship their harvests and goods on the waterways to the eastern seaboard of the United States, to Europe, or to other areas. Before this they would need to travel a great distance on land before being able to ship the goods by boat.
