happened to me last night that’s why I looked it up. BUT happens to me quite often, this one time I was dosing off in my girlfriends arm near the kitchen. Then I had a quick dream of me walking the kitchen floor where I slipped and fell on the back of my skull. I woke up with a shake/twitch/spasm or whatever I was brought here for.. it was pretty intense. So last night’s experience I just had to look up. Making sure I wasn’t in any sleep paralysis. (=

Sleep happens in different cycles. Depending upon what cycle of sleep you are in you are in a deeper slumber. Stage 1 is light sleep where you can be awakened very easily by slight sounds or movements. Stage 2 your unconscious eye movements stop and there is an occasional outburst of brainwaves so you aren’t completely dreaming by this stage.
Stage 3 your brain waves become steadier and more frequent. Stage 4 you are pumping out delta brainwaves constantly.

Stage 3 and 4 are called ‘deep sleep’ then comes REM sleep. This means that your limbs become temporarily paralized, your breathing becomes shallow, there is a lot of eye movement under your eyelids and your brainwaves become so active that they are similar to if you were awake. This is the stage that most dreams happen in.

Anyway to answer your question, you jerk and move because of brain waves that will jolt parts of your body that are not yet in a paralyzed state causing you to wake up. You are not completely still in sleep until you reach REM sleep.

and there you have it.
