Why do I invest so much time in cooking for my five year-old?

His name is Lucian.

I have a habit of cooking at least one meal a day. I spend a good amount on it and I’m constantly looking for new and exciting recopies and yet, I must wonder why I do it.

Today, I wasn’t home and my boyfriend was asleep so, rather than wait for me to arrive at home, Lucian made himself a concoction involving Almond Milk, Crackers, Cereal and melted Chocolate. It was simply nauseating and yet, he loved it. He actually finished it.

Another time, I’d made him Raspberry Perogies with a very special sauce that took me about an hour to get right. He dropped the entirety of his plate on the floor, then proceeded to pick them up and rinse them off, insisting that they still taste really good. He shared the rest of it with the cat.

That brings me to my questions.

Why do we cook for children who will eat anything?

What is the strangest thing your child has ever eaten?

Do normal kids do this, or is mine strange?

I should clarify that I found this adorable, though it is slightly annoying and though I don’t encourage him to do it, I don’t scold him for it. I usually don’t say anything at all.

Answer #4

Because we all love our children! I dont have any yet, but I do have nieces, and no matter what they do, I still love them, so do the same with food, still cook for them, it will help in the long run :)

Firstly, Lucian is a LOVELY name! We cook for our children because we want them to taste a broad range of food that will turn them into adventurous and healthy eaters when they’re older.

What a sweet child to have rinsed off his food and STILL eaten it. It’s likely he felt bad about dropping it and didn’t want you to feel bad. :)

My son is only 7 months old, but I was a Nanny for two children (started out when they were 4 and 1, ended with them at 6 and 3). I used to cook up crazy imaginitive dishes for them. I’d even go as far as making the dishes look like funny faces (julienned carrots for hair, chicken eyes and ears, mashed potato mouthes with gravy… etc). I did it because I love them and wanted them to enjoy eating something that would be good for them. The craziest thing that the two year old ate was probably a raw potato, eyes, dirt, skin and all! I thought he had a brown pear for a second and let him have about five or six bites before I was going to de-stem it for him. That’s when I noticed it was a disgusting, dirty potato- which he was LOVING. Same child also used to eat crayons like they were chips. Had to watch that one every second! :)

I do the same thing for my kids. When I cook dinner I always try to make something that each of them will like and with 3 of them having different tastes it’s hard to come up with something for them all.

The craziest thing I ever did was 3 years ago on Halloween. I made a “scary” dinner. Complete with spaghetti brains (they were blue), hand bread sticks, and a meat loaf shaped like a foot with toes and nails…it also had ketchup for blood. For dessert we had eyeball cookies, dirt cake with worms and a spider cake. It took me 2 days to get all the desserts done. My kids loved it. Now we do this every Halloween, somehow Halloween has gotten to be better than Christmas for my kids.

There’s nothing wrong with cooking for your child, it shows that you care about what he eats and that you want to make sure he eats healthy.

Keep up the good job being a loving mom :)
