Which works better anti depressants or cognitive therapy?

Which works better anti depressants or cognitive therapy for curing depression? Is there really a cure for depression? Are these treatments safe?

Answer #1

Dear Dora1, If you take anti-depressants you should also always have therapy with it. The first defense for depression is therapy. If this isn’t enough then the anti-depressants with the therapy may work together. Sometimes finding the right type of medication and therapy takes time and some give up way too soon. It can be a long process but one well worth it. Sue….good luck

Answer #2

I suffered from depression for 3 years without saying anything, and then finally got help when I turned 16. I never once took anti-depressants, I stuck to cognitive therapy and I was much more comfortable with that- I was told that anti-depressants would have to be gradually reduced and I would have to work through therapy as well as take them, because they were not a real solution to the problems I was going through in my mind. In my opinion anti-depressants are more of an aid if needed in order to face what people have to during cognitive therapy, but aren’t really a solution on their own (although there are always exceptions of course.)
