It depends on how much responsibility you want. A fish tank with fish is very little responsibility, very interesting for a child to watch, and they can help feed them easily. They are also easy to replace if something were to happen.

Your son will be wanting to poke the pet 24/7 so it’s best to get something in a cage that you can put on a tall table to give it some peace. Hamsters and rabbits will start to smell if your flat isn’t very airy. But they will make good pets as your son can hold them and play with them, then you can put them in their cage when they have had enough. Fish are also good as your son will be able to look at them swimming around for ages without getting bored (it’s like a TV!) He can even help pick some fish. The only downfall with fish is that when your son gets a bit older, the fish will die and he might get upset. A small dog could be good as when your son is older he can help walk the dog and it’s little so it won’t pull him over. Puppies are also very cuddly and love to be cuddled. Cat’s are probably not the best idea as they may scratch your boy when he tries to play with them. Birds are good but they take training for them to be able to sit on your shoulder and run up your arms etc, otherwise they just sit in the cage.
