What is an easy to care for type of fish that we can buy for my 2 year old?

He loves the fish at walmart so weve decided to buy him a small fish tank with some fish. I know nothing about fish tanks and fish. I want something that isnt going to cost alot of money and are easy to care for. Also, do all fish tanks require filters and such?

Goldfish are virtually indestructible, cheap, easy to keep and of course pretty.

I’ve kept goldfish in a tiny pond outside for a year without feeding them, without any filter or air bubbles. They thrived.

They do equally well inside. Just keep the food to a minimum, and get plenty of REAL plants, and a few small snails in the aquarium. This helps small micro-organisms to breed and bring the aquarium to a natural state faster.

Don’t use any of those pet-shop chemicals in your tank. They generally end up killing your fish. Just fill the tank with water, and let it sit for a few days (maybe 3). Then buy some cheap feeder goldfish (generally $2.00 for 12) and put them in there.

Once those feeder goldfish survive for a few days, then you can put in your real goldfish and you will be good to go.

Totally agree with ericson, Gold fish are beasty little creatures i’ve gone on vacation for a month and forgot to feed it it didn’t get fed, it was perfectly fine when I got back, I simply feed it a pinch of fish food at night and it’s survived over 3 years so far and it’s only one of those little 10 cent fish.

I think the best fish for a 2 year old to take care of are the bottom feeders..i think you can by them at walmart for like $2.00 but they eat the algae off the side of the tank and its ok to sometimes forget to feed them cuz they feed themselves and they also help keep the tank clean so you do not have to clean them as much as you would have to if you bought just goldfish or beta fish

Answer #4

I recommend male Beta fish (aka Siamese fighting fish). They are colorful, don’t need aeration because they are air breathers, and do not have to be fed as often as tropical fish. Since they don’t eat much they don’t make much waste so the water doesn’t have to be changed as often either. You don’t need a filter for a small betta tank but you should perform a partial water change every couple of weeks. Bettas do best in warmer tanks so if your home is cool you may want an aquarium heater. Never put 2 male Bettas in the same tank or they will fight. I used to like holding a mirror up to my tank so my betta would puff up thinking another Betta was nearby; I figure the excitement was good for him once in a while.
