I've been with my boyfriend for 2 years. We are in a serious relationship that'll lead to marriage soon. We both graduate this june from university. He will attend my graduation because I'll give him a card. He has a big family and just said that if cards are not enough maybe he will not be able to take me !! He said family members will be sad if he takes me instead !!! What? Doesnt he care about my feeling?? I'm going crazy! I made him feel guilty about it and started saying sorry but that means nothing..really tell me what should I do??
Honestly, I'd probably invite family too. And it would be because I'd be expecting my girlfriend to understand why it is important for family to show up. You've been with him for 2 years. They watched him grow up. Graduation is really a family thing. They take pride in watching the boy in their family graduate. If you were married it would be different. Whether you're with him forever or not, this is something that they'll never let him forget. Why are you making his day about you?
I'm afraid I can see where he's coming from..family is #1 to me also. Even the most secure relationship has a possibility to not last forever, even if it seems that it will. And graduations are once-in-a-lifetime. I can see how he would want his family there, first. I know this isn't the answer you want, but try to see it from that point of view.
