Well I’ll try :)

From what I see:

Chinese people are more hardworking in school and maybe even at work, not to say that Americans are not a hardworking bunch. But they try too hard such that their entire lives revolve around work and school and the pursuit of money, which means that other aspects of their lives will be affected. That is pretty much the case in most of Asia, Japan aside. Not a society I would want to live in, honestly.

Chinese food in China is VERY DIFFERENT from American Chinese food but both taste good. That is, if you get the food from restaurants, because Chinese canteens suck.

A Chinese official would in all likelihood claim his country as a “multiethnic” country, with 56 officially recognized ethnic groups (55 of those would be considered Asian). This is nothing compared to the US which is a rich melting pot of cultures from all over the world.

One thing Americans have got to learn from the Chinese however - they have got to stop their stubbornness and start learning about the outside world. Chinese people are hungry for knowledge, Americans these days generally sit back since they are already on top of the world. But if Americans do not learn this quickly enough they will fall behind quickly IMO. Just my opinion of course.

Oh and of course there’s the press freedom and oneparty/2party differences and all that stuff.

“Well, let’s see.

There are fewer bicycles, terrible health care, every one is very large and very angry, and they get totally, bafflingly hysterical if you talk about eating dogs or horses.”

Terrible healthcare? Maybe in the largest cities like Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou, but in rural areas of China you get NO modern healthcare at all. At least in America you do have access to modern medicine, whether medically insured or not.

Chinese people are very loud. Not all of them, but that’s the general perception in my country (where China-born people are everywhere these days)

Hi,

  • There is a lot of cultural misunderstanding.. In USA people normally say what they think. In China people will be very, very polite and only make a hint for what they think. Chinese people will understand the hint, US-people will maybe not understand the hint. Chinese people might think that US-people are rude. But they are not rude.

  • Food is very different.

  • China has 5000 years written history and USA has 500 years written history. People from USA are fascinated by ancient buildings and other very old things.

mikeh: I think that Chinese people do not eat dogs. Thai people eat dogs. Chinese people cook dogs for tourists from America and Europe. Because Americans and Europeans often say ‘China’ when they should say ‘east Asia’.

I dont know a whole lot about the chinese culture, but I do know about mine. The united states is a melting pot of all different kinds of people. so, in the US you wont be able to find the same kind of people with the same opinions anywhere you go. we all ROCK individually!!! I would say though, in the united states people are free, so you’re going to have a cultural attitude that is more blunt than you’re probably used to. dont worry, just loosen up and get ready to experience things you never have before. our culture wil definitely spark interest in your mind:)

rotten: from wiki… Dog meat (Chinese: 狗肉; pinyin: gǒu ròu) has been a source of food in some areas of China from at least around 500 BC, and possibly even before. Mencius, the philosopher, recommended dog meat because of its pharmaceutical properties. Ancient writings from the Zhou Dynasty referred to the “three beasts”[cite this quote] (which were bred for food), including pig, goat, and dog. Dog meat is sometimes euphemistically called “fragrant meat” (香肉 xiāng ròu) or “mutton of the earth” (地羊 dì yáng) in Mandarin Chinese and “3-6 fragrant meat” (traditional Chinese: 三六香肉; Cantonese Yale: sàam luhk hèung yuhk) in Cantonese (3 plus 6 is 9 and the words “nine” and “dog” are homophones, both pronounced gáu in Cantonese. In Mandarin, “nine” and “dog” are pronounced differently).

The eating of dog meat China dates back thousands of years. Dog meat has long been thought by some to have medicinal properties, and is especially popular in winter months as it is believed to generate heat and promote bodily warmth. Also, dogs have occasionally been eaten as an emergency food supply.

The Chinese usually only eat dogs raised specifically for meat, not those raised as pets. The dogs are slaughtered between 6 and 12 months of age.

In addition to this raccoon dogs are skinned alive for their fur.

I hope you are happy in this country…we tend to be selfish and wasteful but extremely generous at times.

Welcome. Cultures are different but all people are basically the same. Some good, some bad.
