I've been seeing this trend (mainly in the US) with girls getting really hyped up about turning 16. I've seen discussions about it here, and been appalled by the tantrums thrown by spoiled, bratty teens on MTV's "Sweet 16" show. While I understand that the age of consent in most states is 16, I can't see this as a reason to throw a horrendously expensive and elaborate party. I can understand 18 (legal drinking age where I'm from) and 21 (being considered an adult in society) as age milestones, but turning 16 seems like such a non-event. So, my question is, what is it about turning 16 that warrants such a big fuss?
I have no clue really, except that I've learned that it's a "right of passage" (mainly to latin/spanish girls) - because they're seen as adults and are allowed to leave home and get married!! - I didn't have a HUGE a55 sweet 16... actually... my sweet 16 was a dissaster! - my friends (2) tried to shoplift me a present! - and they got caught! it sucked!! but yeaaa... I have no idea why some girls make it so big, like the girls showed on MTV's "Sweet 16"!! I rather save my money on somrthing else! - prom perhaps?
It's not just girls though, there are guys on that show too. But, I agree. It is stupid.
"Your old, you wouldn't understand." What? I'm sixteen, and I understand that there are more important things than throwing a party for ONE night, with some people from my school, and maybe some that I don't even know. And paying thousands of dollars for it.
Spoiled brats is what they are.
Well 16 is the age where girls feel like they have more freedom. Its kind of like having more options, as in, driving, getting a job, etc.
On the MTV show sweet sixteen, most of those girls arent that bratty. My cousin was on an episode, and they script a lot of the things aired.
I hoped I helped :)
"Your old, you wouldn't understand."
LOL Lex is 22, how is that considered "old"? She may be older than you, but definitely not "old". If she's 'old', you are a mere fetus. It's only been 6 years since Lex was 16, so her point of views are not that ancient!
I agree! I've watched MTV's Sweet 16 - its so stupid. I'd be embarrassed to throw little fits like that. Its so pathetic. I'm 15, which means my sweet 16 is coming up. I'm not real excited about it. Its just another day.
hmm... they're not much of a dreamer.
Oh Lexi... there's an MTV show called ''My Super Sweet 16'' ...look for it on YouTube. It will quite literally make you vomit.
Your old you wouldnt understand.
If girls want to spends millions of dollars let it be your not paying
Its THEIR dream come true.
"Your old, you wouldnt understand"
Yeah- I'm so old... oh to be young and narcissistic again...
sixteen is a big party of a teenagers life .
you get your licensed or how ever you spell it .
girls love their own birthday
More freedom!
