antivirus
MacAfee Total Protection is a good all-around preventative suite. It's pretty strict about what it will and will not let access your machine. Sometimes too strict.
If you've already been infected, check out HijackThis. It's not very user-friendly, and takes a bit of reading to learn how to use, but it's very, very thorough. It basically scans every executable on your system and creates a database. Then you can take that database to a website that will analyze everything it found and tell you which ones are dangerous and which are legit. Then HijackThis lets you delete all the nasties.
I had a Google re-direct virus that thwarted every attempt to remove it, but HijackThis found it right away.

I think AVG is good, been using it for a few years now. But if you should decide to spend a few bucks? Go for NOD32! You can not get better and it is very low on system resources.
McAffee is probably one of the best you can get AVG wich is good, for free, where as mcafee and norton will cost you money
AVG is a FREE anti-virus program that is excellent
