How does a waxing gibbious moon get its shape?

i undertsand about the orbiting and the kinds of moons there are, the moon is darkened by the earth’s shadow, but it seems that the only way the earth could make a shadow like that is if it were the shape of an apple bitten to the core! must sound more complex than it is, but if you understand, answer?
