Was the correct decision made ?

The Netherlands has issued an official message to Muslim immigrants: if you want to live here, you must integrate. If judged on the standard scale of caution in dealing with cultural clashes and Muslims’ obligations to their new homes in Europe, the language of the Dutch position paper and Lilianne Ploumen, Labor’s chairperson, was exceptional. The paper said: “The mistake we can never repeat is stifling criticism of cultures and religions for reasons of tolerance.” - Was the correct decision made ?

Government and politicians had too long failed to acknowledge the feelings of “loss and estrangement” felt by Dutch society facing parallel communities that disregard its language, laws and customs.

I’m not sure for I haven’t read the article. I am though always open to new cultures and when walking in a public place, you can hear different languages and, I’ll have to read the article and think about this. Its really interesting and I’m also glad you posted this.

I think a prime minister of australia said something similar not too long ago. basically if you want to live in our country then you have to live by our rules. quite fair if you ask me.

The Netherlands has always been a progessive society…allowing for freedom in chosen lifestyles. With the great influx of Muslims into the country…people who do NOT agree with such a free society, there are clashes with gays, drug users, protitutes and other lifesyles…Muslims against all of them. Muslim immigrants are bordering on 20% of the European population, giving them a good boost in voting power…and they’d like things to be the way they want them…I can understand the Dutch saying “no way”…we are free and you came to us, not vice versa…The Dutch were very instrumental in hiding and protecting Jews during WWII…many risking their lives to save people from other countries…they aren’t an easy nation to push around.
