How to stop a friend from cutting. Someone who would like to

Answer #1

That’s always a difficult one. Talk to them and find out what’s making them cut, if you can change the situation that’s causing her/him to cut then go for it and that might help them. the only problem with cutting is, as strange as this may sound, it’s very addictive. Making sure they use clean, sterilized and sharp blades/whatever they use, is very important in order to stop infection, bacteria etc and making sure it’s properly sharp is better for the skin and lets it heal quicker. I assume we’re talking wrist cutting? Keep an eye on them and make sure all the cuts are horizontal (across the arm) and not vertical (along the arm) because when they get vertical they are much more dangerous and usually mean they are suicidal. If they get to this state, encourage them to see a doctor or counciler, and if they wont go then get someone to come to them, that is very important. If you need a way to ask them to stop, then usually asking them to because it upsets you or worries you or something often helps, but kind reminding them you’re there for them and you’ll hlp them through it all. Once they’ve understood that they need to stop, ask them if they’d like you to keep them accountable (ask them everyday if they’ve cut) that should encourage them not to. Depending on their age (and yours) a form of reward after a week or however long of not cutting can help, but that’s up to you to work out as you know this person a lot better. I hope that helped, feel free to ask me anything more on this subject, I’d love to help you through with this :) xox
