Why do they say violets are blue in the poem "Roses are Red, Violets are Blue"...if violets are not blue?

They are purple/violet…which is why they are called “Violets”.

Answer #1

well isnt blue in the same catagory as purple and violet?

Answer #2

Because, like you said, nothing rhymes with purple… =(

Answer #3

They are two totally different colors. Just like yellow and orange are two different colors.

Answer #7

Perhaps the person that wrote the poem was in a garden with blue violets not purple ones…:P not all violets are purple…depending are where they are from…I have a picture that I am looking at with all colored violets…white with purple ends white with pink ends blue violets, light blue violets and also purple violets…google search violets & click images…you’ll load of purple ones but also some pics of different colored violets! :)
