IDK if they necessarily can be better, but they can help supplement traditional medicine. My mom was very much into herbal remedies and dietary supplements, and I have to say after moving out I got away from them for a couple years, and really noticed a different in how fast I bounce back from colds and flu w/o the some of the supplements I took while sick. Also seemed to get sick more often. I started taking some basic ones again daily and feel a lot better for it.
As for treating more serious things - like cancer - I don't feel they can completely treat cancer (but then again nor can traditional medicines) but through traditional treatments and herbal supplements my mom held on through cancer about twice as long as they predicted.
But herbal remedies and supplements do have one very large plus - almost no negative side effects.
they can be very effective, however the problem is, they are not regulated, and exactly what is effective about them in unknown, as are correct dosages. Many herbs actually act in the same way as medicines, which makes sense as alot of active ingredients are synthetic versions of those found in plants. Herbs come under food, and therefore have no regulations which can be quite dangerous, especially to people who are on medication already. For example, drinking st. johns wort tea and taking anti-depressants. I think more testing into the medicinal properties of herbs would be great, and there is quite alot going on. The main problem is that the pharmacology of them is very complicated. The fact that they are largely untested though makes them unsuitable to replace modern medicine in my opinion.
Medications are much better than herbs. First of all, dosages are very consistent, whereas that of herbs are all over the place because of various growing conditions. Second medicines are carefully tested for side effects before being released. Herbs have little or no scientific laboratory testing - usually they only have testimonial support Third, if an herb is found that actually has benefits (and many of them do) the active component is isolated, tested, and then becomes a medicine.
It depends on what medicines your talking about - herbs can be better for you than medicines when i comes to colds, headaches, and some mild pains. I think that parents who use holistic and herbs trying to heal their child that has cancer or life threatening disease however are negligent and should have their child taken away for its own safety. Not everything can be cured or maintained without medication.
i agree but dont u think herbs are more natural for the body to take in plus i dont think herbs have side effects!?
but at the same time do u think its better for poisons to be put in the body that lowers the immune system?
