The Ten Commandments.

What do “you”, think about The Ten Commandments? (I know there are many who don’t believe in God, therefore don’t believe in these either, but your welcome to respond if you like). Briefly, what meaning do they have to you?

Because in the bible it says these are laws given to Moses by God, therefore I believe in them and trust that they are for us to have some structure in our lives, even though, we might be able to develop structure on our own. I am seeking and finding God through faith, I am not a perfect christian, so I would not be an example to follow, but I rather believe than not to.

Answer #1

As a Christian, I believe the Bible ‘cover to cover’ - it’s God’s 10 Laws for man - ‘Thou shalt (means not optional/mandatory) not’, 1 - 10.

Answer #2

I think the Ten Commandments are great rules to follow! I am a Christian, but that is not the entire basis of my opinion.

Did you know almost every society has almost all of those laws as their own laws?

I really like that the commandment to honor thy father and mother is followed by a promise (the only one that has a promise actually).

I feel that if people including followers of Christ and the Jews actually obeyed those laws in all things we would not have the problems we have today. The religious wars would probably never started, let alone escalated into a massive killing spree as they did.

For me, the meaning they have is that God cared enough about me, about us, to set down rules to live by. It reminds me that we all have a choice, and that we can choose to side with God and not sin against Him, or against others.

“I think the treat ‘Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You’ should be up there too, I definitely think it’s important and it’s too bad a lot of people dont follow it. We might have less hate spewed speeches if they learnt to really follow what the bible says…”

(Unfortunately, this is true, sometimes, fellow christian members act in a way that scares off even a believer in God, but then again, speaking for myself only, I go to get the good things out of my christian faith. I try really hard to do unto others as I like done unto myself. After all my life is less than perfect and every day is a learning process for me. Thanks all your feedback helps me to become a better person. Esp. more sensitive to the diverse ways of feelings/thinking.Whatever your journey is in life I hope in the long run it works out for the best, peace, love, joy, happiness to all, life is to short to live it any other way).

Matthew 7:1- Stop judging others, and you will not be judged. For others will treat you as you treat them. (Greek reads “for with the judgement you judge you will be judged”)And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying. ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye.’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log from your own eye; then perhaps you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.

Answer #4

They’re silly. There are situations under which almost everyone agrees it’s ok to break these, and several of them are simply ridiculous even at face value.

  • Murder - in modern war, there are innocent casualties. This is murder plain and simple, because an act is consciously undertaken in which it is statistically guaranteed innocent people will be killed.

  • Stealing - it’s ok to steal for self preservation if necessary

  • Adultery - lots of couples have open marriages

  • False witness (this is NOT the same thing as lying in general) - this is the only one I can’t think of a situation where it would be acceptable, but someone more creative than me probably can

  • Honor you father and mother - not all parents deserve respect. Many of them deserve to be locked up instead

The other 5 are pretty much stupid. The 10 commandments are nothing more than the penal code of an ancient desert tribe. They have little applicability to modern society.

Answer #5

The law of God contains ten commandments.

Exodus 20:1-17, NIV. “ And God spoke all these words: ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

[1] You shall have no other gods before Me.

[2] You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, but showing love to thousands who love Me and keep My commandments.

[3] You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His name.

[4] Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but He rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

[5] Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

[6] You shall not murder.

[7] You shall not commit adultery.

[8] You shall not steal.

[9] You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

[10] You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.’”

Answer #6

Good:

Don’t murder - this harms another human being Don’t commit adultery - this harms another human being Don’t steal - this harms another human being Don’t bear false witness (lie) - this harms another human being

Middle of the road:

Keep the Sabbath - I could care less about the “Lord’s Day” but I do think we need to have at least one day of the week to rest and recuperate. Honor father & mother - great as long as your parents are not abusive **Don’t covet - I think it’s ok to want something like what others have (that’s the root of capitalism); however, we should not be jealous of people or property in a way that would cause us to do harm.

Bad:

No other gods - this infringes on freedom of religion which I believe is an important fundamental human right. No idols/graven images - see above **Don’t take God’s name in vain - this infringes on freedom of speech which is also an important fundamental human right.

Answer #7

Our Lord God Almighty gave Moses the Ten Commandments for all human beings on earth. If you love God you will respect Him and do as He has asked us to do. “If you love Me, keep My Commandments” Do you love Him?

It is our duty to obey God’s law. Ecc. 12:13, NIV. “Here is the conclusion of the matter. Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.”

What is the purpose of the law? Romans 3:20, NIV. “Through the law we become conscious of sin.”

God’s law offers direction, not justification. Gal. 2:15-16, “A man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.”

I John 3:4, NIV. “Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.”

It is necessary to keep ALL of the commandments not just the ones you think are important, James 2:10-11, “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. For He who said, ‘Do not commit adultery,’ also said, Do not murder.’ If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.”

We can’t know God without keeping the commandments. I John 2:4-6, “The man who says, ‘I know Him, but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys His word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in Him: Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.” So, if you love Him you’ll do as He has asked.

Through Jesus, our relationship to God’s law is make clear. Matt 5:17-18, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” The 10 Commandments were not abolished at the cross, only the Old Mosaic Laws were.

Are we saved by keeping the law? Rom. 3:27-31, TLB. “Then what can we boast about doing, to earn our salvation? Nothing at all. Because our acquittal is not based on our good deeds; it is based on what Christ has done and our faith in Him. So it is that we are saved by faith in Christ and not by the good things we do. And does God save only the Jews in this way? No, the Gentiles, too, may come to Him in this same manner. God treats us all the same; all, whether Jews or Gentiles, are acquitted if they have faith. Well then, if we are saved by faith, does this mean that we no longer need obey God’s laws? Just the opposite! In fact, only when we trust Jesus can we truly obey Him

Answer #8

Gods laws are just and true. If we live by them, we can have peace in our hearts and minds, and fellowship with the living God.

There is no deal like this on planet earth.

It dosen’t get any better than that.

You oppose yourself… when you oppose God.

Answer #9

No religious as all, and agnostic to boot.

But the 10 commandments (most of them anyway), are pretty good rules to follow.

Seems like most religions pretty much overlap in many of these anyway.

Answer #10

Silverwings, not believing in something is not the same as opposing it.

Show me evidence of his existence and I will consider believing in him.

If you say we must belive with out proof, I say screw him. If this is all just some stupid test to see if will buy the BS, and that how we live our lives has nothing to do with it, then I want nothing to do with the SOB!

Answer #11

Toadaly is spot on…

They are completely irrelevant today. They are not the basis of any of our laws. The only ones that exist in any laws today are murder and stealing, and lying (perjury). These have been considered wrong in all civilized societies, even in societies that are not judeo-christian ones. Knowing they are wrong is self-evident to most people, and belief in the supernatural has no bearing on that. The other ones are as taodaly said, just silly.

Answer #12

Four Commandments

  1. Honor thy parents – one and all – For in each their own way, they did sacrifice for you.

  2. Steal not – anything – Neither life nor property, nor effort Nor a just reputation from anyone.

  3. Share your abundance – in material and knowledge – With the haves and the have-nots, To help pave the road for all.

  4. Seek the Truth – Teach your Truth – Constantly and fervently, But with an open mind to the Truths of others.

Answer #13

They’re good rules to follow, whether you’re religious or not… I mean a person may not believe that they were sent from God, but for an ordered society they’re pretty good rules…

I think the treat “Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You” should be up there too, I definitely think it’s important and it’s too bad a lot of people dont follow it. We might have less hate spewed speeches if they learnt to really follow what the bible says…

Answer #14

Don’t you find it a bit odd, that you’re following Hebrew laws, the same religion that demanded Jesus be executed?

Answer #15

Don’t forget the NEW Ten Commandments…

snort

Answer #16

The ten commandments are very important laws, we must follow them because God wants us to and it would be good if we all followed these important laws made by God.:)
