Is the Pill bad for you?

ok… so I heard that being on the pill makes it so you don’t get your period. I really hate that time of month and I would love to get rid of it… but is the pill bad for you? and I’m afraid if people know I’m on it they’re going to think I’m having sex, which I’m not!! any suggestions?

You’re going to get varied answers on this - Because every woman’s body and her chemistry is different.

The pill shortened my period and made cramps virtually non-existent. I only get a period for like 2 days. (Ortho cyclen a monophasic pill)

The pill is very safe. Your period while on birth control is very different from your normal period, so skipping your period for long periods of time is safe. Birth control pills normally have a placebo week - sugar pills basically and that is when you get your “period”. This type of bleeding serves no reproductive purpose. The bleeding is a symptom of the hormones progestin and estrogen being withdrawn, there is no egg to flush out - so it’s a “fake period”.

The inventors of the pill, which debuted in 1960, supposedly decided to mimic the menstrual cycle because they thought that would make women more psychologically comfortable with the product.

Lybrel is a newer pill for “continuous use” - that is a pill for 365 days. Sounds great to not have a period for a year, but most people who have taken it, have experienced periodic spotting. Technically, you can take pretty much any pill and just skip the placebo pack for continuous use, but ask your health care physician first.

Most women are fertile soon after stopping the pill.

Of course there are side effects to the pill. But it DOES NOT make you gain weight. that’s a myth. If you smoke or are over 35 then there are risks of blood clots. There are other risks and side effects, so be sure to consult your health care provider.

Birth control pills are very safe these days, much lighter than they used to be. The doctor can help you find one that works well you, with the right balance of estrogen and progersterone. You still get your period every 28 days as superfresh menioned, but it’s very light, 3-4 days for many, hardly any cramping and quite monor side effects.

You may gain some weight and (this part is horrible) you may have a decreased libido (sexual appetite). This is usually a caase of finding the pill with the rightr mix of hormones for you.

But contrary to what Mella is saying, they are VERY safe.

ok, well if you dont like your period, or you have an irregular period, I would suggest the pill, when your on the pill, you still get your period, just not as often, because if you didnt get your period, it would make it impossible for you to have children, anyways, the pill is suppose to be very discreet unless you tell anyone about it, so it should not be an issue, funmail me with any questions! good luck! :]
