Why do teenagers, and people in general use the phrase, " im going to cut myself now" when they are upset or just jokingly do it??

It isnt something to joke about or take lightly and it bothers me alot. is it just because people don’t care?

Answer #1

Some people are just attention seeking, if you pretend to listen it will make them worse. I tend to ignore them, people with real problems would not boast about them.

Answer #2

Their referring to cuttiing themselves as to depression or sadness. Some people joke about it but its really not that funny some people have mental issues and actually take a knife to their skin. Its serious and the ppl who say it so buzz of.

Answer #3

Most likely they are making fun of people that do that & don’t even realize that it’s offensive. Sort of like saying, “that’s so gay” you know? Just brush it off, people are gonna say dumb things but what can you do?

Answer #4

im well aware people have mental issues and take a cut themselves i have 3 bestfriends who have and have done it myself and i think it is extremely serious and i believe people need to be educated and stop joking about it.

Answer #5

For attencion, so someone can say “no, don’t do it” Sometimes it might just be that they need to talk to somebody, so its a cry for help too. Other than that, they might simply be making fun of “emos” or people who who cut or are depressed and stuff.

Answer #6

It’s just a joke I guess. And people can be pretty stupid about what they joke about.

Answer #7

I’m guessing u r into that stuff ha well gurl we r all here to help don’t cut urself lotta work to much blood to clean up and in the end ur still losin. Ya got cuts everywher and scars and nowadays laser removal is expensive just chillax u can wear all that sad black clothes and chill with ur friends no need to cut urself:)

Answer #8

It isn’t anything to joke about and I find people who use that phrase weird and disturbed.Don’t people know don’t say it if you don’t mean it…especially something serious like that.

Answer #9

I have never heard that phrase used in my school or in my community before. It’s the same thing as making fun of a certain group of people kind of picking them out by using phrases they would most likely say. It’s like “That’s so gay” they’re making fun of homosexuals which is not cool. Sometimes it’s met to offend most times it’s just joking around like a “hahaha” thing.

Answer #10

i wear bright obnoxious clothing not sad black and hang with my friends regardless, and i dont cut anymore, the term is still demeaning and hateful

Answer #11

I agree with you and yet some people who cut themselves are seeking attention others who are doing it out of depression must seek help now my question for you just out of curiosity is what was your reason?

Answer #12

they like to making fun of those of actually do cut themselves not knowing that the person that they say it to can be cutting themselves like once someone said that trying to be cool and all and i almost had a breakdown i cut myself not everyday but occasionally but it hurts people can be real jerks sometimes

Answer #13

i had serious problems thats why

Answer #14

Relax. You’re taking something to heart that isn’t supposed to be. Don’t take everything personally. One of the funniest things I heard before was a comedian who ended a joke with “excuse me while I cute myself with shards of my broken dreams..” And do you know why it was funny? Because it’s an exaggeration of the truth, and taking the mickey out of something. Everything’s a joke these days. It’s like sexist jokes. A lot of people say “make me a sandwich” or “go back to the kitchen where you belong” to women now. It was hilarious before it got old and it’s not really a big deal, but many feminists got very offended. Get the gist?

Answer #15

i understand where you are getting at and just because something is funny to people other people get offended but as long as some people thought it was funny it makes it just? Its a way of making fun of people and people’s feelings getting hurt isn’t a funny subject also when people say this and some people who might be going through this type of situation becomes even more depressed because they are being picked on indirectly.

Answer #16

It doesn’t make it just, no. But the intentions behind it make it just. It’s just a joke, nothing more. There aren’t any ulterior motives behind saying that. If there are and that person is launching a personal attack on you then that’s entirely different context and that person will hurt you anyway by another means if not that, so the phrase isn’t really to blame, it’s the people using it in that way. What I’m basically saying is that the majority of things we do would offend someone in some way or another without us realising. If everything is censored then what’s left? Just try not to take it to heart next time you hear it :)
