Why don't people with Aspergers get jokes?

I have a friend who has Aspergers. I don’t know much about Aspergers, but I was playing football with him. I joked that I don’t like Chelsea (I was doing the only kidding joke) but he took it literally, but I didn’t realise that until today after school, when he said “Why don’t you like Chelsea? They’re good.” He was a bit miffed after that.

Please answer if you know lots about Aspergers syndrome, because I’m worrying that I upset my friend.

Answer #1

People with Asperger’s have trouble with non-literal speech. Most people can detect sarcasm, hyperbole, understatement and symbolism but all of these things are difficult for those with Asperger’s.
