How should I teach my son to be gentle to animals?

He is not gentle to my sisters dog. I don’t know to go about teaching him to be gentle

Answer #1

How old is your son? Most babies are bad with animals because they don’t realize that they are hurting them when they shake and tap on them… If he is older then you need to tell him straight forward but if he is young then keep him away from animals he could potentially hurt or ones that could hurt him.

Answer #2

Show him, by petting the animal yourself, and saying softly “You’ll hurt the animals if you pat them too hard” like grab his hand gingerly and stroke the animals lightly, maybe he could get a feel of ‘how to’ do it the next time. Allowing him to play, but tell him, don’t jump on, or hit/throw em’. It takes a while to get them used to animals, but if he listens closely and watches what form of ‘gentle’ others mean, he could be good after that C; Hope this helps~

Answer #3

He’s only 3 months old. And my sisters dog is little. Izzy adores him. And my sister watches him when I’m at work.

Answer #4

I like this I just don’t know if he’ll catch on because he’s only 3 months old

Answer #5

true^ Though I didn’t know the age at first. younger kids, especially at that age, should be watched cautiously around animals, considering animals could harm the child or the child could harm the dog, or another pet itself.

Answer #6

Yeah my sister watches them I’m just afraid he’s accidently going to hurt Izzy. Izzy loves him. And my sister is the one who will watch Aiden when I’m at work so I can’t just keep him away from Izzy.

Answer #7

Tell him, use simple words like nicely or softly. And then give him examples of how to stroke the dog.

Answer #8

True, just always wanna keep an extra eye on little ones ;) My neighbor has 3 kids, and 2 little ones, and well 2 cats, though it took a while for her to teach her youngest to gently pick up the cats, and not by her scruff.

hold his hand and control how hard he pets the dog then let him do it himself if he gets to ruff just correct him he will get the idea. also babies at that age do not have the best muscle control so it may come with age
