Sure, you could use margerine, butter, or oil. They all work. Butter tastes the best though

i prefer using margerine than shortening actually you can also use what was said above.

If you have apple sauce, you can use it for up to 2/3 of the fat in your recipe. For example, the recipe calls for 1 cup of butter/margarine, you can use up to 2/3 cup of apple sauce.
